Had an ACDF on the C6 c7 6 mo's ago. I am having a hard time getting the right side of my body to function right. I was released to go back to work a few months ago and i was fine but then when i started climbing stairs and doing the normal activities at work, I started going down hill. Had a MRI, Bone Scan, the works it all comes back normal. However I get cold chills on the right side and not on the left, I get swelling on the right, pain and tingling as well. I also have a hard time getting up and down from the sitting position. I have put on 60lbs since all this started a year ago. I just don't know what is going on but could use some type of insight. PLease!!!! I might add it is not just the upper part of my body it is the lower part as well!

I was fused from C3 to T1 3 1/2 years ago and I can tell you that it takes time. The spinal cord is slow to recover and the individual nerves take just as long. You go up and down. Come on down to the Spinal Cord Disorders board and talk to some of the others and you'll see that this up and down course is more common than a smooth recovery.

It's taken me 3 years to get to where my recovery has stabilized and I know what is good and what isn't. And my doc told me that it takes a minimum of 2 years to recover from that kind of major orthopedic surgery, just like it does a total knee replacement.

You should let your doc's office know about it and perhaps see him/her but I bet it's just part of the recovery process.

As for the weight....a lot of people gain as they aren't moving as much and the worry and pain makes you eat more. The body says...feed me! I know I eat when in pain.

I once read that the "spine is slow to forgive" and now I know what is meant by that. As a part of the brain, it remembers the damage and is very slow to heal and forgive you for hurting it. But it will forgive you sooner or later.

good luck..............Jenny

jenny gave you some really excellent advice on just truely how long this whole process can actually take with some of us. what i am actually wondering here was what were the most pertinent findings found upon your pre op MRI? it would be in that summary in the very last page?? that too can matter one heck of alot just depending upon esp if there was ANY real cord contact as well? any real cord contact, and depending upon just how much true compression there just was before it was decompressed can seriously impact the recovery and the insane crap you can possibly feel as well. thats why i am asking. the mere fact that you simply are also having alot of lower torso symptoms just could indicate 'some' level of possible cord impact, thats all. are you having ANY level of actual sensory type loss along with what really sounds like at least 'some' level of possible motor? any very direct or radiating or wrap around a limb type pain either(from at least hip level down?)? just how was that lower functioning right after your surgery, better or have you had to kind of 'build up' to where you even are right now? were there ANY lower torso types of symptoms pre op or is this brand new for you?

you just really sound as tho you had some pretty solid types of impact, at least at certain levels/areas just having what you have going on now? any info on your pre op status would seriously help possibly explain what you are even dealing with and feeling right now as things try and 'right" themselves. keep in mind that ANY recovery from any real surgery is simply an ongoing 'process" here too. good luck to you and i hope things will only continue to improve for you. forgot to actually ask this here but were you given ANY form of actual PT post op, even specific types of excercises?

also, and this really IS much more important than you may even think it is.when you mentioned that all your 'tests' came up 'normal" was that merely TOLD to you or do you actually have your very own copies of any and all of your own test results? this DOES matter, trust me. if you do not actually have the reports from EVERY single MRI or other types of testing i would VERY highly suggest that you obtain them now. being 'told' everything is normal by esp surgeons compared to what could possibly actually even BE in any given report can be a totally different picture unfortunetly for us, the patients.

it IS a pretty sick practice but not all surgeons esp will even tell all patients about everything that is even a true solid finding that would be listed in that back page summary? i have personally been outright lied to by my NSs nurse about what was the very REAL reason for my even worse c 7 radiculopathic symptoms found upon my own MRI after my hardware placement surgery actually impinged my c 7 nerve root. this WAS the reason for my continured symptoms, but only because the nurses 'boss' actually did that impingment during he surgery, she was NOT actually going to even tell me my own real Dx that truely explained like everything i had been feeling back then. luckily for me i was already obtaining my very own copies of my own MRIs back then or man would things have ever gotten majorly ugly for me in thinking(but very obvioulsly just KNOWING otherwise) everything is 'fine' when it was soo clearly NOT fine? she was rather 'shocked' when i asked her about that impinged c 7 nerve root it talked about on page one??? man was she speechless then. god that felt sooo good. that was just a really sick thing to do to a patient.

just make darn certain to ALWAYS obtain your very own copies of anything that you ever get tested from here on out if not doing it already? and do obtain all of the older stuff too. just a very very helpful suggesdtion, trust me.

Feel bad

I haven't recieved any copies of anything from the doctors, I have just taken their word for it. Thinking they would know what they were talking about. I guess My discs did go forward instead of backward, I just had to be different,I guess, Yes it affected some of the motor nerves, Also it took them nine months to fine someone to operate on me as noone would because of the risk that was involved. I don't know what is going on with my body but,I do know it is not right. I was in perfect health before this surgery matter of fact i had hurt myself doing a triathalon. Now I bet I couldn't run a block.I can barely even walk, and it wasn't even suppose to effect the bottom half of my body. So I just don't understand what happened! I just know my body just isn't right! Regardless of what all the test say.

If this helps it says that I the MRI showed a C6 C7 right paracentral disk herniation with neural foraminal stenosis. But I was also wondering could my thyroid be causing some of these problems? Should I get a thyroid stablizer?

honestly, considering what is going on now and whatever was going on pre op here i would actually go and at least obtain EVERY single record and document from anyone who did anything to you like your surgeons clinic notes directly from his office, along with any and ALL of your MRI results too(getting these from either the ordering docs or the actual facility that did them? the facility is usually the quickest and easiest)? and the more important thing here besides those telling MRIs would be to simply call the hosp where you had this surgery done at and ask them for the med records dept and then tell them you just want to obtain all of your hosp records. you do the very same thing from any doc who has had any part in this whole situation too? they will simply send out what is a release of information document that you just sign, telling them exactly what you want(i usually, in the hosp situation with any surgery say "any and all documants contained within my central medical file" along with specifically asking for what are called "op notes' too) and then send the document back to whoever you are needing the racords from. in about a week or so, everything will just start showing up in your mailbox.

i have had to do this for many many years not only just so I know without a doubt that i have indeed been told EVERYTHING about me, my MRIs and what took place in my surgeries along with all the follow up surgeons notes too? this really gives YOU the best overall 'impressions' of what your surgeon actually 'feels' is going on or what happened during that surgery as well(both with the hosp op notes AND his follow up visits with you office notes)? but this also allows us to simply keep our very own medical racords at home for OUR files since this IS all very much now a part of YOUR ongoing medical history?

and one really important piece of possible info here is if you actually did have ANY real what is called 'intraoperative monitoring' done during your actual surgery?? this involves placing little electrodes like ALL over your body, and not just what they would do only on the chest and back when simply doing basic heart monitoring during the surgery? this is ONLY used when any surgeon feels they have ANY possible chance that the actual spinal cord may be involved in any way during your surgery. its kind of a 'safety device' for the surgeon and for you too since it would kind of tell that surgeon by what shows up on the monitor which is constantly watched by a neurophysiatrsit, whether or not what they either are about to do when they simply touch any given area of spinal tissue or after they actually have done something, that a motor or sensory nerve was hit within either the more outter cord level but still inside the cord, or even hitting the outter nerves as well.

you would have had to have been introduced to the neuro phys pre op if this actually took place just like you have to also meet with any anesthesiologist pre op too? by law, anyone who is going to be having any direct part in your surgery, you just DO have the right to ask questions of. if you are unsure as to whether or not you actually had intra op monitoring done, when you write down on that release you will get from that hosp, along with asking for those really impoortant op notes? also ask for ANY possible intra operative monitoring op notes too. they also by law HAVE to also make their own set of their op notes. this particular document, if this was done IS where ANY possible issues occured during your surgery would actually be mentioned when the surgeon just utilizes it. its kind of nice forthe NS since he does NOT ahve to mention in HIS notes then, anything adverse that occured since it IS covered in the other op notes. believe me hon,i found all this part out the very ahrd way when my intra notes were NOT even in my hosp central file but i KNEW i had that level of monitoring done? i lost out my first round of trying for SSD ONLY becasue the actual op notes that HAS my damage in them were not in that file and i had to obtain them from the actual neurophys himself thru HIS office, it was like playing detective just getting my very own right to info there.

but i would most definitely start just making basic phone calls to any docs/your surgeon offices you have seen about this and the hosp and the facility where your MRIs have been done too, or you can actually just show up to the facility to obtain your own MRI reports, they can pop those off for you while you wait just a few minutes and get them much more quickly too. all you have to do to obtain those MRI reports is fill out that same release document right when you walk in after telling them you simply need all copies of any and all MRIs or any other imaging studies done there too and they will just look them up in their system and run them off for you right then.

once you actually start getting this stuff, that is when you just start reading thru like everything, esp the MRIs both pre op and post op to actually just see what it was you possibly were not actually even told about. this sick practice just does go on out there esp with the "surgeons' and any real specialists actually.

what you are really trying to find out here overall is was your cord actually involved or compromised in ANY real way shape or form and you were NOT actually even told. everything i mentioned above would actually allow you to find out the MOST possible real solid info on you and your overall pre op and post op status. and that info IS simply needed right now in order for you to even know what just is possibly damaged or even possible right now to regain? it all depends more upon what WAS injured/damaged or compromised. good luck with this, just make some phone calls and wait for the releases to come and get the process going. you and every patient simply DOES have the right to know what i mentioned above to you.
