Can someone explain this wireless internet thing to me?

Okay so I've been renting a little duplex for a couple months. For the past week or so I've been looking into getting internet. About $60.

The other night, I plugged in my laptop to watch a movie. That little box popped up "wireless networks are available" popped up in the lower right-hand corner. I clicked on it just out of curiosity to see what was available. Then, just for the heck of it, I clicked on one of the available networks, and WA-LA!! I'm connected to the internet. For free. I'm naive about this stuff. I assumed I needed one of those wireless adapters. I guess I don't.

I guess my real question is: What's the catch here? I'm surfing for free. Are these wireless networks safe for long-term use? As far as I can see, I'll probably be able to use this as long as I live here.

Thanks.
