Can someone educate me in the pros and cons of protein shakes?

I have friends whose diet consists almost entirely of protein shakes, and they're buff as hell. One friend has a protein shake for breakfast every day, and some others will just have them as snacks - even if they haven't worked out that day at all! Are these healthy/beneficial practices? Or is there a downside as well?

They will make you fat. It's all about calories intake. it's difficult to measure how much protein your body need to much will make you fat.
not enough you will not grow big muscle. if you are naturally skinny I would start adding a little bit more protein to your diet and look for any changes. If you add to much at one time you will gain more fat then muscle. Protein is not the best energy source for the body compared when compared to Carbohydrates. In order to get bigger you must add more calories to your diet, but you run a risk of getting fat.
 
Ok well how the common saying goes if you dont use it you loose it. If your friends are taking the shakes and working out they will help them heal faster essentially making their muscles bigger and making them gain weight. So if they take all these protein shakes what they dont use they simply just poop out.
