English 101 is a contingent course of English 100 which has focus more on reading and grammars. If English 100 is viewed as a fundamental English course, 101 definitely is an advanced one. It, called composition, centers more on the skills of writing and reading et al as a whole.
First of all, I hope to improve my writing skills. In my daily work, I need to write a lot of Emails, reports, and summary of my results. On all these, the ideas I express can be easily understood, and the words I use are also simple. I find sometimes, if I want to deeply analyze some issues, I do not know how I can do it because using simple words and sentence are difficult to express the means. So I need to improve my skills, knowing how to write and discuss a complicated issue effectively. I need to learn to use more powerful words and sentence structure rather than simple ones.
Second, practice may be one of the best ways to lean things. The content at the course can direct student the fundament skills, however, the practice is only way to apply and master those skills. I hope there are plenty of homework of writing in this course and if possible, among students can be built friendly each-help-each relationship. Such relationship is beyond the class. Students can be divided into small groups and write on one topic a week. Once it is finished, the student in the same group can distribute to other members for modification. Except this, all students have the assigned homework and it will be polished by the teacher. Both are to practice, one mandatory and another volunteering.
Third, I hope there are some reading exercise and skill training to read. Basically, papers on textbooks, local news, and Yahoo.com are easy to understand, but those on journals such as New York Time, Economist are more difficult due to more verbal and complex sentence structure. More often, one sentence on Economist can contain 4 to 6 lines with several of types of modifiers. I have to re-read sometime to fully understand the meaning. A necessary training and skills will sharpen my ability to read such papers, saving me a lot of time. Moreover, I can also learn the writing skills from those authors once I know the structure of the sentences.
Finally, I hope my ability of writing and reading can be sharpened after the class. After I finish, I can say, wow, it is easy to read papers on Economist.com and New York Time, and can analyze deeply and write an issue in articulate way.
