Can somebody suggest a martial art that I could take up?

Hey (:

I'm Maddy, I'm 16, I live in the UK. I have a very busy lifestyle what with doing my GCSEs at school and various extra-curricular activities. I'm 5'4 (about 164cm), and I'm a little on the skinny side (UK size 8-10). I'm really really unfit at the moment, and physically weak; I have slight anaemia and I'm also an insomniac; i often have low energy levels, bascially. HOWEVER, I want to try and improve my health and decided it's about time I do some exercise!

For some reason I'm really drawn to the idea of learning a martial art, but there's so many and I don't know how to pick :S I used to do Judo between the ages of 8 and 11 but I never really enjoyed it, and I'm looking into taking up something new. I'm not the kind of person you would look at and associate with martial arts, lol, but I figure everyone has to start from somewhere, right? haha.

So yeah, could anybody advise me (: ?
Thanks,
Maddy x
I guess something 'more useful on the street' would, as you put it, be more useful?

there are so many martial arts you could take
you should narrow down more what you are looking for

do you want something with flashy kicks or something more useful in the street

Hi Maddy,

It really depends what kind of thing you want to do as the different sorts of martial arts vary so much from style to style!

Just from my experience though, I did kungfu from the age of 8 until I was 18 and I really enjoyed it because there was so many different aspects to it. From self defence to tradtional animal-style display forms. And at later levels I learnt some weapons forms which was lots of fun! And all very interesting to learn about.

It's a great way to keep fit and make new friends. I hope you manage to find something you like!

Try Wing Chun, ideal for the smaller framed person, no need to fear larger opponents any more, you'll be able to quickly get inside their range and attack them close to their body.
