Can riding a bike help with running?

What I want to know is if riding a bike will help me build up a better tolerance for running. Also I just want to know if it's a good form of exercise period. I love riding my bike I am in the Navy and trying to prepare for boot camp but my recruiter tried to tell me that riding a bike isn't really good exercise at all. So I was just looking for every ones opinions. Thanks.
Also if you are going to give pointless one word answers just don't. Like the girl who just put "no". That's not helpful at all.

Biking is fantastic exercise and can only help - it will improve your overall condition and strengthen your legs. But, because it will train the muscles used for biking, the best training for running is still running.

Biking can also not be great exercise because it's such an efficient form of transportation that, excluding steep climbs, you can pedal casually all day and not get much exercise - you need to push it. Mountain biking is even better because off-roading is harder, and uses more of the body as you negotiate all the obsticles, and the terrain is less even than roads and paths.

PS - if cycling is such lousy exercise, why do so many people and gyms spend so much money on bikes that go nowhere - just for exercise!
