Can reading in a social environment be anti-social?

I do not think it is rude to read in a social situation. It seems 'madam' is demanding of attention. wanting to be the leader of the gang.. That is unacceptable in a social situation.
Yet it is time you broke the silence as it seems to be you who are caught in the middle. So there are 6 in the group 3/3 so what is the linking that holds the group together? When you get the chance you could ask your friends why the others are so mean. They could just be jealous.

I am being hated because I read too much.
The reason I am reading frequently at the moment is because of a situation I find myself in at school.
I hang around with a group of five girls, three of which are doing their utmost to exclude me from this group.
The other two are my friends, but because my ex-friends like talking to my current friends, I don't want to push myself in where I am obviously not welcome.
Being in the group is awkward for me; the hostility rolling in waves from these three girls is almost tangible.
So, instead I take to reading because it is something I enjoy doing, and I can still be there for my friends if they want me, but I don't have to talk to the other girls.
I've been told that one of the hostile girls thinks that this is very mean and anti-social of me, so I am wondering, should I give up my anti-social 'pursuit' in life, or should I try to break the silence and make things more bearable for the friends who are caught in the middle?

Is it rude to read surrounded by people who obviously don't want to talk to me? Is it rude to read in awaiting public at all? Or is my method of avoiding trouble and unnecessary anger right?
