can police radar guns detect a cars speed if the cop and the car are going the same

direction? i was just wondering cuz a cop at my work told me and some friends that the radar guns dont work if they were both going the same direction and if so that would be really a nifty advantage to my upcoming trial lol so anyways i looked it up on google but i didnt really find anything saying it was or wasnt true
