Can no longer mount G1 on PC

I can still charge over USB (it even gives the "USB Connected" notification), but the memory card is no longer recognized on any PC I try it on. A drive letter shows up on the pc, but when I try to open it I get "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (G."

My G1 can still read all the data on the memory card that was there before this started happening. I can also still save data onto it out of email and the web.

Interesting, just took a look and the memory card remains mounted on the G1 even when the USB is connected. If I choose to unmount it, it does in fact unmount, but still is unavailable on the PC.

Try something, just for the hell of it.
When I tried to access my SD card through a Linux computer I found it was locked. I could see the card but could not do anything with it from the computer. The solution I found was:

Under Settings > Applications
click "Unknown Sources"
This will 'allow install of non-Market applications'. Basically, it changes the security/permissions settings on your phone and card. Remember to un-check the "Unknown Sources" when done experimenting.

Doing this may have no effect on your problem but it fixes the issue of permissions blocking when accessing the card from a Linux computer (my WinXP computer was totally oblivious to this security feature).

If that does nothing for you then I would ask what computer system are you trying to access the SD card from? Can your computer actually handle SD cards of 1Gig?

My old HP laptop can handle 1Gig CF cards but cannot handle a 2Gig CF card (from my camera). If you have an older computer then perhaps your issue is with your computer's capability to access a 1Gig card period. If so it is likely not a malfunction of your phone or SD card.

Just throwing out ideas for you. Good luck.

You checked the notifications and selected 'Mount' under the 'USB Connected' item, correct?

Since RC29 auto-mount for USB was replaced by a pop-up notification to choose mount/don't mount the USB. Either way it adds a drive icon in Windows when you plug in a USB cable- just the later doesn't allow access to the MicroUSB...

I'm having a new problem; plugging in the phone doesn't even cause the mount option to appear in the notification bar. I've allowed unauthorized sources.

Have you shutdown your phone and restarted it to see if this clears the issue? Hold down Call + Menu+ End Call your phone will shutdown and reboot after 4 seconds or so. Did this resolve your issue?

1) What firmware version is your phone using?
2) What version of windows are you using?
3) Are you using the USB cable that was included with your phone?
4) Does it work if you use a different computer? (Go to your friends house, the library, your work, the computer store or wherever to find a computer to test your phone with). If that computer doesn't work what version of windows was it using?

You have to test your phone to determine if your hardware has failed.

This has worked for a few people i've told that had this issue, download anycut in the marketplace, then create a shortcut, activity, SD Card. Then open the shortcut that it creates, should let you manually set to mass storage.

I had a problem like this a few weeks back. I plugged in the phone, mounted it and it worked. I tried again and the computer saw the drive but would not allow me to see that card--it even charged it.

I then realized that I was using a different usb port than I originally did. So I moved it from the port on the right side to the port on the left and it worked.

This sounds ridiculous to me, because it should work from any port, but it fixed it it.

Maybe that will help

Hi, and thanks for the response.

My Firmware is 1.0

I've rebooted many times, but never with that key-combo. Cool, thanks.
My lap uses Ubuntu Hardy Heron, my desktop runs Vista.

I used the USB cable that came with my phone until is stopped working with data, even though it still charged. I switched to another cable and was able to transfer data for a while. now it just charges - no matter the cable or the computer.

That got my check box back for allowing mass storage. Useful for troubleshooting, but I still have the problem. Thank you though. That's nice to have

If you have access to your files on a different computer than it may be the driver on your USB. At least thats what I just figured out was wrong with my computer! I found directions to fix the USB issue here

http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/usb2-driver.html

So, you have this checked and you still cant access the sd card from your computer? and dont get the notification?

Do you have another SD card to try? Did you try taking the card out and reinserting it? I wonder if its the card.

I suppose its possible its the usb drivers, you could try uninstalling those and reinstalling them. That might fix it. If none of the above work Id try a factory reset. And if that fails then call up tmobile and see about a replacement phone.

I've noticed that G1 doesn't work on Vista and produces such error:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

After reading your comments, that changing ports may help, I tried it and it works.
But I have noticed one thing.
It seems that G1 is only compatible with USB2.0. With USB1.0 it only charges itself although it gives notification asking if we want to mount the SD card...

I smell bug :-D

i connect my g1 to pc using the cable i got with my phone and it charge's but dosent let me see the sd card it dosent say mount sd card and it say on pc that the usb connected has malfunctioned and windows dosent recognise it what can i do ?

dwayne just do what josh said - "download anycut in the marketplace, then create a shortcut, activity, SD Card" That worked for me

Thanks Josh

regdent i downloaded anycut and it still doesnt work just pops up malfunctioned device but still charges so i think i will have to take it back to the tmobile shop

Well guys now you have a second victim to this issue...
little background to my problem:
1) i noticed things stoped working after this last update offered by t-mobile/google, update released sunday oct 4th.
2) I first saw the problem on a windows XP pro computer, then on the vista business, then on my XP home edition pc, and then on my windows vista home premium pc, also on my girlfriend's Mac Leaopard malfunctioned. Actually the issue some are misunderstanding is that NOTHING pops up, and i have the same problem.
3)Supposed to have a question on the phone "mount?/Not Mount?", that does not pop up.
4) this is not a matter of computer or hardware/software problem, because the G1 recognizes the computer even if there is hardware/software problem (if you need explanation what i mean quote this and i'll explain).
5) i believe it might be the actual usb cable, i changed my cable with the one from my external cell phone batery and i think that may be the reason (though it has worked before using other usb cords). tryeither getting another usb cable from your phone store, or use a data USB cable, i researched and it seems there is a small very small difference between the common usb charging cables and a data cable(sometimes causes malfunction)
6) A very nice girl from t-mobile pda/G1 systems will give me a follow up tomorow night as to what this problem might be resolved with and then i'll post in here following her response.
7) it may be that a full system recovery on the G1 may resolve this issue, as it seems no-one has yet called t-mobile/G1 with similiar problem before (or so i was told).
8) If nothing works, call your provider for help and they may even replace your g1 model!

Also: I tried all the ideas you guys gave already = non functional to all!
Please: if you got any more ideas shoot them away!

haha this is so funny...i solved my problem!
here is what i did...

if you are still having this issue, get a different "data transferring USB cord" not a "charger cable".
the difference is the following: A "data cable" is one such as from a camera, the original usb from g1, an external HDD reader, a usb that comes with purpose of transferring information. A "charging cable" is one such as the ones that comes for the play station 3 controlers for wireless, or any other cable that plugs somehwere for power, such as a multi outlet usb charger cable (the sell those on g1 stores, they wont work for data).

if your original cable that comes with the G1 is not working, go to the store and ask to see if they can try one of theirs open cords, that will troubleshoot to see if its the cable that is broken from your phone!

also make sure you keep that any cut shortcut in hand, very usefull when media exchanging, its actually faster to have that on i think!

uhh yh i have this same issue ........downloading anycut right now like wtf

anycut works but barely i must access the shortcut everytime i want to mount via usb and its still hit or miss i gotta try over and over till it works ........ is there maybe something i can type in terminal to force my usb mass storage to stay on

im so pissed off im pulling out hair here likw wtf could this be bcuz i rooted it ?
