Can my fuel sensor be stuck to 'empty' if I put too much fuel? I have a 2005 Ford...

...Explorer.? The guage read 'full' last night, this morning, it read empty. I thought I had been ripped off, but when I went to tank up, it would only all $4 to be put in.
