Can my car be slipping "into" and "out of" time, as far as timing?

I just started it.. runs rough, idle low, etc. Might be "out of time." Stalled many timed. Started it, gunned it, now it idled ok the rest of the way home? I shut it off, it stopped with a "Shudder." I wonder what i going on?
