Can Kilz primer be used underneath the padding when putting down a new carpet?

The previous owners in the house we just bought must have had big dogs since the entire carpet and padding in the master bedroom stinks, even after having two professional companies clean and put enzymes on it. We ended up ripping out the carpet which was full of urine stains and some must have leaked through the padding into the wood of the floor since you can see it. Our carpet guy suggested using Kilz paint before having someone put in new carpet, but I haven't seen that written anywhere.

I think thats a good idea. Kind of in the cant hurt,might help catagory. It locks in the stains,so i dont see why it wouldnt lock in the odor to. I would just try it,and dont lay your carpet for about a week to see if the odor dissapears. we used the kilz on our wall,granted they didnt have an odor,but they did cover up the stain. hope this helps! Also,as crazy as it sounds,vineger kills urine stains,you may wanna try that to. just get a spray bottle and spray. I dont know if your one for home remedies,but i was suggested it after my dog(who lives outside now!,but i love him) urinated on my Wedding dress! devestating! but not only did white vineger get the stains of the urine out,it also got rid of the smell. hope this helps!

Kilz is one answer. You can use ANY odor blocking primer. Also, If they are hardwood, there is no problem, other than the sanding man. The odor is terrible!

The boards don't need to be replaced unless they are damaged. 2 coats of polyurethane will do the same thing as the odor blocking primer.,

Yes! Good carpet guy. You need an encapsulating paint......Kilz is one brand. If you have a beautiful hardwood floor underneath, even sanding wouldn't take out the stink, the actual boards would have to be replaced......and you sure would't want to paint over nice hardwood. But if your floor are like mine, just plywood, paint away.

Let it dry up and air out try alittle bleach mop the floor with hot water then let it dry up again. then i would use fabreze.

Yep, that is absolutely what you NEED to do.

Enzyme cleaners will remove the organic matter from carpet by 'eating' the stain, but once the dog pee has gone below the carpet itself into the padding and (worse!) into the floorboards, the only options are to seal the boards (KILZ will do that) and replace the carpet with new carpet or another flooring surface OR to tear out and replace the floorboards (Yikes!)
