Can it be argued that what Darwin really accounted for was not the origin, but the

elimination of species?

The idea being that if you assume the number of species created has been decreasing, rather than increasing from one microorganism, Darwin's theory accounts for how they were eliminated. It doesn't do so well to account for how they all speciated.
Objection: Are you arguing that biodiversity is in fact increasing? Or that it is decreasing despite all indications that it should not?
Meng: Did you know that after the drought seasons, all of Darwin's finches went back to the way they were before he observed them changing? The variants in beak size etc. were all already contained in their genetic code & they went back to their "normal" when conditions were more favorable.
