Can it be a bad oxygen sensor on Ford Taurus 2005 and not have engine light on?

I'm about to buy a car from a dealer. He took it to do inspection and wash it. Then he said that they had to replace O2 sensor and need to drive it around a little bit to get rid of bad codes. It's all good, but I never saw an engine light on. It doesn't make sense to me. It's a 2005 car with 56K miles on it, but perhaps there could be issue with it. I took it to mechanic before all this and they said the car is fine.
