can ipods play through the usb cable you use to connect to computer wen its

connected to a stereo etc with usb? i have a ipod classic and i don't know whether it will work if i connect it to a stereo or someting with its usb cable into the usb port on the stereo?
i have a dvd/ipod dock thing that also has a usb port but my ipod won't work through the usb thing, is it supposed to?
it also won't work through the usb port on my ps3. it says there are no tracks.

1. I dont think its supposed to work that way at all.
2. your PS3 can't see the music because it's in a hidden part of the ipod only itunes knows where to find it.
