Can i write a detailed description for a "new use" patent if i dont know...

...exactly how the orignal product works? For example (I know this already exist) say I want to patent the new use of adding a timer to a fan, I don't exactly know how a timer works. Can a detailed description simply state "the new use for a timer is to connect it to a fan and when the timer runs out the fan turns off"? Thanks for any help
