Can i wera a white dress to a wedding?

I found a dress that I love (which is rare because I hate wearing dresses) but the problem is that it is white. It's made of white eyelet fabric.
Is it OK to wear if I pair it with a cardigan or some sort and a belt? I have asked friends and everyone seems to give me a different answer :). I thought maybe nowadays it would be OK.
