Can I use regular unleaded fuel in a 97 Cadillac Deville?

I'm looking at purchasing one with 165000 miles, previous owners only ran premium fuel, can I use regular? Would it just effect fuel efficiency or is there a greater risk with using regular? It has the Northstar motor.
 
Fuel efficiency will not be noticed using different octane gases. If you hear pinging under load with regular unleaded, you may need to move to the mid-grade, but I don't believe you will have any issues.
