hello
I am a uni. student.I use Http proxy to connect to internet using port 8080.All the P2P is blocked in my uni. including most of the ports. As far as I know,3 Ports are open 80,443,8080.A file size limit is applied by the proxy server MAX downloadable file size limit is 86 MB.so many restrictions.I want to download new TV Shows.can I use newsgroups?

Usually newshosts offer an alternate port to connect to. Check their faqs before joining one.

Filesize wont be a much of a factor. Most groups have a max filesize. If they dont, most thing are uploaded in parts (usually 15 MB pieces for tv shows).

I know abt ports n I have seen many nesgruops allowing ports like 443 whic is almost always open on every network. The thing I dont understand is that I dont find any option for proxy server settings in GrabIt.My main question is abt the client.so is there any newsgroups client for downloading which support http proxy?

nopes,i guess files size limit counts.i downloaded GrabIt but i ddnt found any option for proxy server.can someone tell me how to configure proxy server in GrabIt?

Just as something to try, download a bittorent client that supports RC4 encryption (such as bitcomet) and see if using torrents will work with the encryption enabled.

That's how I got around my uni problem (they used something like Packeteer that identifies the packs sent and if it matches certain criteria, it will intercept and trash them)

I don't understand. you have to connect through a proxy?

yes most universities make you connect through a squid proxy cache server. this saves them having to download all the files from popular sites for every user and allows control of what is downlaoded.

have a look in internet explorer for the address of the proxy server and use these.

might be worth going to www.ipchicken and looking up who your uni's isp is. then try a decent newsreader to see what kinda newsgroup access you have from uni and if it works properly before you pay for a server.

As far is i know port 119 is the port used by your newsgroup server. as long as your system admin hasn't got port 119 as a destination port blocked in his firewall setting you can use any port you like to connect.
