...larger diameter? Is it safe? I have a 1997 Ranger with a cracked rim (fatigued near the stem hole). Ford no longer sells this type and I cannot find on ebay or at local salvage yards. I found one on a newer explorer that looks the same with the same bolt pattern, but the pilot hole is larger. Is it safe to use it or does the pilot hole take some of the loading? Do they make an adapter ring? It looks like that would be simple matter to press one in place and go.

If the pilot hole does not match don't do it as all the torsional stress will be on the wheel studs making it unsafe at highway speeds and I don't think there is any adapters available for your situation but some wrecking yards can do an availability search through part locater search

Shouldn't be a problem. Most aftermarket wheels and even some factory supplied wheels come with a very large hole in the center that will fit over anything, or even no formal hole at all, and they work fine.
