Can I use my Verizon phone in Canada to get data without incurring extra charges?

I know I have to pay a high per-minute rate if I use my phone in Canada to make phone calls. But on the other hand, text messages work just like they do when I'm in the U.S. (with no extra charges at all).

But what about data (such as viewing websites on my phone, which is a Motorola Droid)? Can I do that when I'm in Canada? Or would that rack up a lot of charges, like it would if I was placing phone calls?

Thanks!
@firemandan900: Thanks for that answer. If that's their rate for people who don't have unlimited plans, I wonder if they have a reciprocity deal with Verizon that would allow the customers of each company to use the other carrier's data network for free when they're in the foreign country.

At any rate, why are text messages free, regardless of which country you're in?
