I have a 1993 honda civic that burns a little oil, especially in colder weather. I had a mechanic friend advise me to use 10W40 oil in it, despite the manufacturers recommendation of 5W30. However my other friends give me mixed reactions, with some saying "it's going to destroy your car. take it out now!", while others say it's a good idea and wont hurt it much in the long run with such high kms on it.
I've been running it on 10w40 since late october last year, and it's run pretty well, burns no oil and has survived many highway trips. It kinda sounds like it has a stuck valve lifter right now, and I've heard some nasty grinding sound once when starting the engine when it was really cold outside.
I love my car and want it to last the next 10 years, so what should I do?
