my friend is getting a new computer with in 2 weeks and giving his old one to his parents who are mainly computer illiterate. his computer is very old. somewhere between 1.5-1.7 Ghz single core laptop windows xp only 1/2 gig ram only had a 60 gig hard drive. now the hard drive went bad in it and i know it will be a good 50$+ to replace it sence its older. i was wondering if would could just go out and buy an external usb hard drive which i know will be more expencive but if we can i think it would be prefered to buy an 8 to 16 gig flash drive and use it as the primary hard drive so we could save a little money. i know 8 to 16 gigs isnt much but all they will use it for is ebay and googleing no real need for mass memory.

is this possibal to use usb hard drive or flash drive as a primary hard drive? or an sd card? if so can i get step by step instructions, an i dont want the answer "open up the external hard drive case and install it internally" because we dont have money for that kind of mistake costing us another hard drive.

thank you to who ever gives me the best answer. and i will try this method before i chose best answer.
