Can i use a sprint phone that requires data on my non-data plan?

I have a plan that is unlimited text and 1500 minutes but no data. I want a phone like lets say the samsung transform. I have heard people say that you can buy a phone like that and activate/use it even though the sprint employees tell you that you have to have a data plan. Is it true and how do i do it. If it's not true then what phones don't need a data plan on sprint
