Can I use a regulator/ rectifier from a larger bike?

I need to get one of these parts and I have an 82 suzuki gs 450. They have parts for these on ebay from 850's and 650's , but the part is a little bigger. I understand these parts control the amount of voltage going to the battery to keep it charged and turn DC into AC, but why are bigger bikes having bigger rectifiers? Don't they just change the volts?
 
the old honda reg recs were great reg recs people fitted to all makes when originals went down bot not no more they are all tat now that's TECHNOLOGY for you,
the main problem is the amount of wires that each reg rec has,
plug type & the pin out,
 
I would have thought so, but just in case, try getting one for a GS500 - same motor, just bored out to 500 from 450. More chance of it fitting into the space for it.
 
..its ac to dc...but you've got the right idea..
there all basically the same,they do the same job....if it fits it will work...the bigger the more heat it distributes..
