Can I use a LOCKED T-Mobile phone with a different T-Mobile sim card?

I'm looking into buying a used Blackberry Pearl 8120 from a t-mobile customer. I have t-mobile prepaid service, and I want to know if my sim card will work in the phone. From what I understand, he had a t-mobile contract, and the phone is not unlocked.
 
It might work but if both the T-mobile are of different country then you need to unlock before swapping networks.
