Can I update my iPhone 3GS to 4.0 without losing my jailbreak?

I have an iPhone 3GS 3.1.3 Jailbroken with Spirit. I have the old bootrom. I am happily jailbroken and everything works perfectly. But I want the new 4.0 or 4.1 or whatever WITHOUT losing my jailbreak. I know there are safe ways to update I just can't find them.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?
