can i unlock iphone 3gs without jailbreaking it?

I got an iPhone 3GS ages ago, and I believe it was locked to O2.

My contract with O2 has now finished, so I want to use the phone with a new provider.
How do I unlock the phone so that it will accept any sim, but ideally without having to jailbreak it
 
You have to call O2 and they'll charge you like 20 quid and then they'll unlock your phone! And then voila! You can put any sim card in your phone!
