Can I test my friend's modem on my PC and cable connection?

I currently have high speed internet with an ancient RCA modem (maybe 4 years old). My neighbor has a motorolla surfboard. Is this motorolla surfboard modem a plug and play type or do i have to call ISP, give them ID numbers, etc for connection? What a hassle.
