Can I take my paperback book and make it into a spiral bound book?

I have recently bought book of piano music, but it is thick enough that it won't stay open. Can I somehow change the binding of the book to a spiral bind? Also, can I do this with a hard cover? I have an old Joy of Cooking book that is breaking at the binding and I would also like to change the binding to a spiral. Any suggestions? Thanks
