Can I sue someone to pay the deductible for totaling my car?

Back in the January this year my roommate totaled my car (engine failure due to flooding) It did not involve other people, he simply misjudged and ran my car through a flooded street. (no injuries and I was not present and he did have permission to drive my vehicle) Anyway, we set up an "unofficial" contract that he would pay for the $1,000 deductible fee. I have insurance and they have sent me a check for the car's value, minus the $1,000. He also has driver's insurance. And now, since he is not living with me anymore, he has stopped making payments. If this continues, is it possible to bring him to court about it? I am pretty sure it can be proved that indeed he did total it, but are there any legal strings I can pull that state he must pay the deductible or am I just screwed?

Basically: are there any obligations I can dig up that state he must pay me for the deductible? Thanks!
