I bought a classic 170 Boston Whaler Montauk 3-years ago and never registered it, thinking I was just going to flip it by selling it again for a profit. I do have the clean title for the boat and 90HP motor. I have also spent quite a bit on this boat, getting it fish ready and had the engine rebuilt by a quality local marine tech company. I just want to sell it quickly. I am afraid that even with clean titles in hand, I may now run into problems in trying to sell it without registering it first under my name and paying sales tax on it. If that is what I must do, I will do it. However, it is just going to take away part of the profit I was hoping to make by selling it. Any suggestions for me. Can I sell it as it is and just hand the new owner a clean title for the boat & motor? I would like to sell it in the next month while people are still wanting one for this boating season. I live in Seabrook, Texas. Can I sell it without registering it first under my name? It seems crazy to register it and then turn around and sell it all in the same day I went through the hassle of getting it registered. I am unsure what to do here. Would I be breaking any law selling it as I have propossed in my question? I am unsure what to do. Please advise. The new owner is going to have to register it in his name whether or not I do. Why should we both pay to have it registered.
