Can I run a car stereo on a car battery?

I am getting a go cart and i was wondering if there was any possible way to get a stereo to work in it, maybe with enough power to be loud enough while its running??? If there are ways to get a stereo in the go cart what would be the least expensive?
 
You need an alternator also. I don't think most go-carts have alternators.

A stereo would work off of a battery, but for a fairly short time. After, you would need to put the battery on a charger to get it back to full performance (Pain in the neck).

Get an alternator mounted on your motor, and you'll be fine.

FYI, adding the alternator to your power-plant will cost you roughly 3-10% horse-power overall. So it's up to you if it's worth it.
