Can I routinely drive a 1998 Honda CRV 4WD without the rear drive shaft installed.?

The rear drive shaft on my 1998 Honda CRV automatic 4WD was making a lot of noise (I think the joint in the middle of the shaft is worn out) so I removed it. I find I can drive the car without the drive shaft and in front wheel drive only. What I don't know is if I'm causing any other damage. For instance, does this cause the car to think that the real wheels are constantly slipping and therefore a sensor is constantly trying to correct this somehow? Any insight would be appreciated.
