Hay all, how easy and expensive would it be to change the outer metal (top front) case on my T3, one of my alloy cases has dented it slightly next to the speaker grill, not bad, but if it was reasonably cheep to replace I would think about it ta. Any info on this would be great

Dude leave it. It's a pain in the ass to replace to top.

It voids your warrenty, it will completely screw up your PDA.

If it is only cosmetic don't fret you're gonna get more scratches.

Cheers!

I have to say I agree with CH here. It's annoying yes, I dented my TT 3 times and I wasn't best pleased about it for a while. Just to help you with that desicion, the main place I know of that stocks pda spares (www.gethightech.com) doesn't have any replacement T3 cases:
http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=GHT&Category_Code=_TUNG
If they did, they'd be cheap ($10 for T2 one). But not worth the effort if it doesn't have any effect past cosmetic. If it makes the on/off switch stop working, for instance, then you'd want to get it replaced. But otherwise, as CH said, it's not worth it as it'll void your warranty (if you're still in the warranty period).

Just consider it "wear and tear" and a GREAT PDA taking a bruising . . . but I'd rather have a T3 with a 3" hole in it than a T5. At least the one you've got is a METAL case!!

You might consider getting a SECOND one as a spare anyway (the dented one could be the spare?) . . . I see nothing "better" coming down the pike, and you've got a GREAT PDA. I'm getting another T3 myself next week . . . and I'm then "done" for quite a while.

If you get the spare you can "smoke one of them" with all sorts of "scary" experimental stuff like JackSprat, put a bunch of stuff in ROM and use it as the workhorse.

Just a thought.

I don't know -- I'm going to have to respectfully disagree and say that if you can find a replacement case, go for it. Now, I'm saying this after completely disassembling my T2 to see about fixing the screen buzz problem, and I'm also the type of person not afraid to take things apart. It's not that complicated for the T2, so I'd imagine it would be similar if not identical to the T3. On a scale from 1 to 10 (with 10 being the most difficult), I'd rank it a 5 or 6.

Incidentally, I decided NOT to do a hardware based screen buzz fix, and just registered Lightspeed -- buzz free now! But it was worth taking my T2 apart to investigate the possibilities. After reassembling it, I have to say that the slide works better than ever. At least I now know I can easily replace the battery, screen, motherboard, case, etc., myself if needed in the future.

Anyway, back to the original question -- the problem is finding a T3 case. The Get High Tech website doesn't have them and they cannot get them (I emailed). I was thinking about buying a "blemished" T3 from Palm for $229 and then just replacing the damaged casing with a nice, clean $10 casing, but no dice!

Hay guys

Thnx for all the advice

I bought it second hand from e-bay, it cost me 160 pounds, so not exactly sure if I even have a warranty. I?m pretty good at taking things apart, I build my own computers, and even build a kitcar once LOL, well re-built it anyway, but same thing.

If a screen becomes available I might just have a go, the dent is looking at me as we speak, winking, smiling, making itself known to me LOL

I?ve only gone and lost my stylus today DOH!

If you got it second hand it depends when the first person got the device really, and if he registered it... Keep an eye on the classified section of PalmBlvd, and you may find some cheap T3's going if people decide to follow the T5 route. Though ?160 is pretty cheap already...

I know the feeling with the lost stylus. Mine disappeared for nearly 2 months- it turned out it was down the back of the sofa! ( or couch to those across the pond!).
I hate to say it, but my ipaq came with 2 styli. (It was a brand new ipaq- 2 styli must come as standard). I used my spare ipaq stylus on the Palm in the meantime, although it didn't work too well as the stylus was light and the T3 needs a much heavier screen touch than the ipaq for it to pick it up.!
The T3 stylus is much nicer tho ;)

Also keep an eye on Ebay or the local classifieds for a dead T3. People break their Palms all the time...dropping them in the toilet, busting the screen by sitting on it, motherboard failure, etc. All you want is one with a great case. I've actually been seeing some "as-is" T3's going on Ebay for as cheap as $25. The descriptions say, "Looks good as new, but just won't power on so bid accordingly." I'm very tempted -- the website listed a couple of posts above offers T3 motherboards for US$80, new batteries for pretty cheap, too. I could end up with a very nice working T3 for less than $125.

Might just be time to create a nice Frankenstein T3...it's alive...ALIVE!

:)
