You can replace anything with anything with the right equipment.
I had to start from scratch when installing a car stereo in my 1972 Ford F-150, because the old stereo was ripped out, and oddly enough, so was the speakers, wiring, and even the power cord.
And no modern stereo is designed to fit in a vehicle that old, because of the shape of the radio bezel. I just bought a vintage 8 track player, an 8 track to cassette adapter, and then a cassette to diskman adapter. I kept the vintageness of the truck, while still being able to play modern media.
