I have 3 big about 3" long common goldfish. They are outgrowing their tank. I have an ornamental pond that is 2' deep with a circumference of 4'. It has 4 water lilly plants in it and not much else and it does tend to go green over time. Can I put them in this pond, If so what should I do to prepare the pond and the goldfish for the move. Would pond snails help keep the algae down? Do the fish need as much food in this environment? Thanks to all who give sensible answers.

Yes you can. You just need to make sure the water temperatures are equalised by putting the fish in a plastic bag full of tank water in the pond for about an hour.

Algae is a perpetual pond problem. Pond snails help, but you should have a decent pump and filtration to try and keep the pond clear. It's a constant battle however.

It is a good idea to get a pond pump with a UV filter in it. This will take care of the algae for you. You would need to get some electrics installed naturally with some armoured cable running from the house or perhaps the garage. If it's only a short distance then this is, in my opinion, not too expensive, especially when you can cheaply have lights installed too and make a lovely feature of the pond at night!
