Can I put my AT&T sim in an iPhone 1G and use it?

my friend gave me an old iPhone 1G (the original) and i have an AT&T plan with out data or anything just unlimited texting. if i put my sim in the iPhone will they charge me the thirty a month ? is there any solutions to how i can not get charged 30 a month? i don't want 3G service or Edge I'm fine with just using WiFi please help!!!
