Can I put a larger rear tire on a stock Kawasaki Vulcan classic 1500?

I have a Kawasaki vulcan classic 1500 with a stock rear rim and tire. I want to put a larger rear tire on the bike though. So can I increase the size of the tire with the stock rim at all, or do I need to get a new rear rim? Or is there more customization needed?
