Can I purchase a prepaid t-mobile phone but use my own t-mobile SIM card with it?

I am on my parents family plan, and we don't want to get into another contract. So I have two options:
1) Buy the phone on full price, or
2) Buy a prepaid phone (cheaper) and just stick my sim card inside that.

Will that work? Or can prepaid phones only work if you buy the "pay as you go" cards..?
