can i play resident evil 5 without playing any other parts of the game?

hi there

i was wondering ..i have never played resident evil and never watched and movie about it..yeah i didn't..
but i was hoping that i could play resident evil 5 on pc..will i get the storyline and understand whats going on or will i just be lost?..
