can I hook up a tuner or cd player to a yamaha home stereo amplifier just to see

If the amp doesn't have a volume control then just use a portable cd or MP3 player to connect to the amp using a stereo 3.5 to RCA adaptor. All portable players have volume controls built in so it will work just fine.

Sure, just plug the tuner or cd player into the line input of the amplifier.

As the other answerer said it will work just fine. Just make sure the volume controls for the right and left channels are all the way down before you connect anything to the input.
