My girlfriend and I plan on backpacking through the USA. She's always wanted to do it, and I took a year off from school to go with her because I don't want her to go alone and it'd just be a great experience for us both. We've done the math and came up with a rough budget of how things look. We should have about $8,000 by the time we leave but we plan on being gone for a couple of months, maybe 4, 5 or 6. But maybe less. Our goal is to start in NJ and do the Northeast and then go across the north and do the west for a while. We both have family in the Southwest, so we plan on stopping there when we get to those parts. I guess my main question here is, what kind of advice do you have for beginners like us? What websites should I visit for info? What are the laws regarding backpacking, hitching, and hiking/camping and stuff? What kind of gear should we be looking at? Any and all help and advice would be GREATLY appreciated. This is our first time out and we know it won't be perfect but we just don't want to be under prepared for situations.
