Can I get and program keyless remote for 02 Toyota Tacoma?

We just bought an 02 Toyota Tacoma that was repossesed by the bank. It came with no remotes for the doors, but does have power doors and locks. We called the dealer and provided vin # so that we could find out if it should have keyless remote. The dealer said that this truck did not have keyless remote. But then we took truck to a different toyota dealer who told my husband that he could sell him the remote for about $250 and program it for about $50. We want to buy one online cause they are cheaper, but will we be able to install it. All of them say must have either factory installed or dealer installed system already in it. Does the fact that the dealer offered mean that they found a dealer installed system in it, or that they will install one for that price? Would we be wasting our money to buy one and try to program it ourselves?

Dealers almost always say that you NEED to take it to them. They are running a business so you cant really get mad at them for trying to get you to have it done by them.

most eBay listings for remotes state what is needed for the programming.

I purchased a couple of remotes for a caravan that were easliy programmed on my own with steps provided by the seller from eBay.

I then purchased a remote for my Dodge truck and it needed to be setup by the dealer (or so they said) the dealer wanted around $200 for the install but I was able to have it programmed by a local locksmith for around $60.

Here is a link the programming instructions for your truck

make sure that the model number of the remote is correct before purchasing.

give it a shot on your own and see how it works out.. worse case scenario you will have to go to a locksmith to get it done but atleast you dont have to pay the crazy amount of money that the remotes MSRP at.

good luck
