My husband went to court against me - and our children! - and got a restraining order against me. I didn't go to the hearing as my priority was to protect the children from him and from his legal accusations. (He was violent, and this was his way of defending himself by attacking us, legally. I should have got a restraining order against him but it's not my way, my answer to his violence had been to leave him). He didn't like this.
My question is: I have been looking after the kids at home for twenty five years, but I am qualified to teach.
What will happen if I apply for a teaching job at a university or a high school? Apart from my lack of experience, what effect will the restraining order have? It is a five year restraining order. I didn't worry too much about it because I don't want to ever see this husband of mine again. But how will it affect my teaching prospects and any other employment? I have children to support on my own, as my husband left the country after this and I had no child support.
Does anyone know how employers treat restraining orders? I'm sure I interview well, and could explain it - I've never had any problems like this of any sort in my life - and neither have the children, all with perfect school records. But would my work application be automatically dismissed because of this legal stain?
