Can I get a deal from Bell TV?

Hi,
I've had Expressvu for a few years now. I would like to get an HD PVR.

Two questions:
1. I don't want to pay for the receiver...is this possible to negotiate this?
2. What receiver to get?

I don't need an installer to add the second lnbf as I can do this easily myself as I've done this sort of thing many times and installed the original myself.

I guess my original contract that I signed is done. If Bell will not give me a deal, I'll might try Rogers and see what they say.

What do you think?

Thanks.

My mother has been a long time Bell subscriber, and a couple of Christmases back I paid $600 to get her a 9200 series HD PVR. Back then Bell was offering *new* customers a $300 credit if they bought that same receiver, so I called Bell and bitched that they were treating new customers better than their long time customers. It didn't take too much talking on the phone to get someone to agree to offer a credit. In the end, that turned out to be a *huge* hassle because they didn't apply it properly, and I had to call back too many times to get it done right... but after all was said and done, I did get about $300 worth of credits applied to my mom's account.

So, the first question is: how do you feel about getting tied back into another 2 year commitment to Bell. If you're okay with that, you could always go the route of disconnecting and then buying the new receiver as a "new" customer... (I'm not sure, but I don't think they have disconnect fees if you're outside your contract, but you'd need to check the fine print of your agreement to be sure.) In any case, I suspect if you just call and threaten to disconnect, that they'll clue into the fact that its in their best interests to not let you disconnect and they'll do a deal. Make sure you get the employee number of the person you speak with, and keep a clear record of what was promised to you, because no doubt you WILL need to call back to make them keep their word. (For example, I was promised: free HD channels for a year ($120), free professional installation ($75), a Visa gift card ($100) and one months free service $(60).)

The other option, is to switch to monthly rental... and for $20/month they'll send you a PVR, and even hook it up. I think they expect a 2 year minimum commitment on their rentals.

About doing the upgrade yourself... just remember that it is not always as straightforward as just installing a different head (LNB) on the arm of the dish... you'll need to run the new wires from the LNB into the basement, and it probably also needs a switch in the basement and your PVR will require a second cable run to it from the switch (it has dual tuners, so it needs two input cables.)

In the end, you'd have 4 wires from the outside running into the switch... that's for the horizontal and vertical polarized signals from each of the two satellites... then from the switch you'll need a wire to each receiver and two wires to any receiver that has a dual tuner. *AND* if you have enough receivers that you need more than 4 wires out of the switch, then you need a funky arrangement with multiple switches or a higher end switch that supports more than 4 outputs.

I'm sure you can do all that wiring yourself, but just make sure you have all the equipment... the switch being the most likely part you may not already have in your existing system.

Bell routinely offers incentives to keep/get customers.

HDPVR rental free for a year or two
Free installation / upgrade
Discounted programming for x months

There are promotions listed on their web site and you can always call and ask what they will do to keep you as a customer.

I had called to cancel Bell, as I had taken advantage of the Shaw satellite winback promo.

Didn't like Shaw (again) and have switched back to Bell.

When I called back, to un-cancel my account (did so before the account actually got cancelled), I received the following:

20% off my programming (works out to $16 per month)
Bell 9242 HD PVR for $299 (after credits applied to bill)

So I got a deal on programming and a reduced price on the 9242 and DIDN'T have to sign a 1 year contract.

Thanks guys/gals.

- installation is no problem for me. Done it tons of times and I actually used to work years and years ago for the old Expressvu partner/parent company, Teecomm in their R&D. I'm curious if they really have much costs associated with the install and if it would help me get something else?
- I would rather get them to give me a "free" loaner of the pvr for a year or two then get a discount on one

Thanks.

Currently a Shaw customer but want to switch to bell for their HD content. Does Bell offer any deals/perks if I walk into a store for a new subscription? Here is what I am looking for:

1 x HD-PVR plus reciever (9242)
1 x HD Receiver (6141)
12 months contract
No installation needed
HD Extra Value Package ($83/month in their brochure)

I know there is a deal for 50% off receivers.. Can I get anything better than this ??

That is the best deal. I believe your first receiver - you get a free install. The 50% is only off your primary / first receiver. You can choose the 12 months contract. HD Extra consists of Digital Basic + $10 HD (4 HD Themes + US NEtwroks in HD) + choice of any 6 Standard Def themes + PRemium Movies incl - TMN and HBO in HD... At futureshop they told me that I can get extra $50 or $100 on top of the 50% off...not sure - but you can check.

I was previously with Xpressvu approx a couple years ago and left to SC but am thinking of going back to Bell because SC won't allow customers to subscribe to additional programming when on the digital basic bundle. My main interest in programming is hd and movies so I'm thinking of their current offer of $18 per month for the basics plus the movies.

I still own an old bell 6100 model and would need to replace two of my other sd bell receivers over tor hd of which one of the replacements would be their hdpvr. I've always preferred to buy vs rent as it seems for about $60 more in the first year one actually owns the receiver. The dish was left on the roof so I won't need anyone to come out to do an install.

Any suggestions on what the best route would be to go. Does Bell have any promotions for bringing back ex customers.

You will get no deals at all if you decide to use your own receiver and Dish.

To get any kind of deal, you need to sign a 2 year contract and get a new receiver.

Your 6100 is still good for HD although it will become obsolete in a few years when Bell switch over to MPEG4. I would suggest looking at this as a new customer and then at the time of installation add the existing receivers to your account.

The only way you will a "deal" is by threathning to disconnect...

Bell rarely make retention offer for a client to buy receiver, the mostly make free rental offer for 1 or 2 years...

If you get that type of deal be aware that you will have to pay the rental certificate (just like any other client) which will be credited on your first Bell TV bill after you activated the unit. Rental certificate is 100$ for HD receiver and 50$ for SD receivers.

Rental unit needs a professionnal installation. Make sure your offer covers the tech cost as well, it is free if it's first HD receiver and you haven't had Nimiq2 programming in the last 6 months

For post number 9:
If you reopen your old account there would be a reactivation charge of 50$
The good side is that you will be on a month to month subscription, therefore you can leave whenever you wish (with a 30 days notice)
You won't get any new clients promo

You can also choose to create a brand new account
You will have to sign either a 1 OR 2 years contract
You will be eligible to get new clients promo

You are not eligible for any "retention" offer or "sweeter" deals than the actual new client promo. You are not helping Bell make any profit now, why would they give you "goodies" to attract you?

Thanks for both of your replies.

I had originally signed up for a 2 year period with the expecations that the the price would not increase within the first month and the hd signal would not be so poor with consistant audio dropouts. Well after one month the programming fee was increased and the audio droputs was terrible.

So why would they give me a goodie ... well not expected with their past practicies but I feel it is well warranted.

You are probably wondeing why I would go back to Bell with my previous experience. Unfortunately I have a Big Belly with a little brain. But if they would make amends and offer a deal for the receivers with the programming promotion it would be worth considering going back with them.
