Can I drive a friends car for my license?

I am getting my license in June in the state of California, I have a car, however it was my friend's and since they have moved away, he has given it to me, but he bought it used. What do I need to register it and get insurance on it? Also, if I could drive a friends car to get my license. Is that possible? If they have their own insurance or do I have to be under the insurance to get my license?
