Can I choose jail time over paying for a traffic ticket?

What if I just refuse to pay for a ticket, or I just simply don't have the money to pay for the traffic ticket? Can I just go to jail instead? That way at least my insurance won't go up.

As long as your traffic ticket is a misdemeanor of offense, there's no jail time and most court will work with you and give you time to pay. Most courts don't put anyone in jail for traffic tickets either and regardless of the fine or penalty, the ticket will be on your license.

Paying the fine is not what triggers the insurance increase.

Once you are found guilty, the court notifies the state about the conviction, and then the insurance companies find out. It doesn't matter if you serve time or pay money.

Some judges will allow you to do time instead, some don't.
