Can I change the name of an author who wanted to publish poems but is now deceased?

My friend wrote a book of poems but never got it published. He had a terminal illness and gave me his poems, hoping they would get published one day. He used a pseudonim as the author, but I want to publish a very small run with a few testimonials about his life (from other people), but want to use his actual name as the author as opposed as the nickname he wanted to use. Do you think that's ethical or should I do what he was wishing?

I'd respect his wishes and use the pseudonym. He wanted to be known by that for a reason, and as his friend you should respect it. You can still use the testimonials, just change the names in them to what he wanted to be called.

I think you can use his name, AND your name. Because you didn't write it, he did. Here you can say:
By : (Your friends name)
And (Your name)
