Some of the cellular providers do offer "pay as you go" plans which are similiar to a Tracphone, GoPhone, etc. Verizon does, check my source link for their plan.

Simply buying a WiFi card as suggest by jy.deane will not give you cellular access, it will only give you access to internet at places that offer free WiFi.

It is my understanding that you can buy prepaid for the internet from Telstra/Bigpond.

No there is not. But just go to Best Buy or another store and buy a internet card that you put into your laptop for internet access. Just a one time fee. Good luck
